Dr. Karel Absolon

Dr. Karel Absolon (June 16, 1877 - October 6, 1960) was a Moravian karst researcher and one of the great figures of European archaeology in the first half of the 20th century . He was the grandson of archaeologist and speleologist Jindřich Wankel . After studying zoology and geography at Charles University in Prague, he qualified as a private docent in physical geography . From the end of the 19th century, he devoted himself to exploring the Sloup Caves and collecting cave insects . In 1908 he joined the Moravian Provincial Museum in Brno as a custodian of zoological collections, where he built and led the diluvial department dealing with the Quaternary.
