Svatopluk Čech was a Czech journalist, writer, poet and lawyer. He was born in Ostředek and died in Prague of colon cancer. He was buried at the Vyšehrad Cemetery. Czech studied law at the Prague grammar school after matriculation. After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer until 1879, when he left the law and devoted himself exclusively to literature. He was a member of the editorial staff of Světozor, Lumir, Národní listý and Květů.

In 1881, he published his first collection of poems entitled "Peasant Ballads". In 1883, he published his first novel "Behind the border hill". In 1884, he became the editor of the magazine Lumir. In 1892, he published his most famous novel, "The Baptism of St. Vladimir". Svatopluk Čech is considered one of the most important representatives of Czech literary realism.
