sochař

Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff (September 12, 1688, Červený Hrádek near Jirkov – March 8, 1731, Prague) was a Czech sculptor and woodcarver. He was the son of sculptor and woodcarver Jan Brokoff and the brother of sculptor and woodcarver Michal Jan Josef Brokoff. Together with his father and brother, they were among the leading representatives of Czech Baroque sculpture.

He was born in western Bohemia as the second son of Jan Brokoff. Like his brother Michal Jan Josef, he continued in the family tradition and apprenticed in sculpture in his father’s workshop . From 1708 to 1713 he studied in the workshop of the then famous Ondřej Filip Quitainer, but from 1709 he was already working independently .

In the Czech environment, his works on Charles Bridge are particularly well known. Ferdinand Maxmilián is credited with authorship or co-authorship of eight sculptures on the railing of Charles Bridge.

During his numerous travels, around 1714, he met the prominent Austrian architect Jan Fischer from Erlach in Vienna, with whom he then collaborated on his significant works. Together with him he received orders from Vienna and Silesian Wroclaw, but they also worked together for Prague and Czech clients.
